I’m Rachael McKinney, creator and author of Bite Me Cakery. My blog is what I use to document my endless playing with new recipes, and hopeless fumbling about with my fancy camera.
I did not go to culinary school. I learned to bake entirely by playing with recipes and absorbing the help and knowledge of those kind enough to bestow it upon me. Baking doesn’t have to be a scary thing. Some days my kitchen has a 3 inch layer of flour and sugar covering it. It gets messy. But that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s all going to hell in a bread basket. Sometimes the biggest mess creates the most delicious surprise, but sometimes it goes the other way. Sometimes it’s burnt and crispy with nothing to save it. But I survive to tell the tale and hopefully learn something in the process.
In the past, I have worked in a bakery and I have single-handedly manned the pastry case for a high volume gastro-pub in Denver. Right now, however, I’m a slave to the books at the University of Denver…which is my excuse for infrequent blogging.
I’m definitely still learning how to use my camera. I got my first DSLR in 2010 and have since developed a new passion for lovely photography. All of the pictures on this site are my own, unless otherwise stated. Most everything on my blog pre-2013 was taken with a Nikon D60. Since then I’ve upgraded to a Nikon D7000. A lot of the pictures in my gallery are from my phone, I instagram everything!
I’m not a professional blogger. I don’t post dailies or weeklies or even monthlies. Sometimes posts come more often, and sometimes I get a little quiet. Most of my posts are inspired by things I find on Pinterest, cookbooks/mags, or my insatiable sweet tooth. I always include a link to the original recipe because I’m in no way trying to reinvent the wheel. This is my way of recording my trials and errors. I swear sometimes in my blog. And drink. Like I said before, baking shouldn’t be scary, and it shouldn’t be stuffy either! So pour yourself a cold beer or glass of wine and get your bake on!
